Executive Summary

Purpose

Using DWC method to present the viability of an indoor hydroponic system, utilizing vertical space in an average NYC apartment

    Problems

  • There is a lack of affordable food and an agricultural system that would be sustainable year-round.
  • Due to climate change there has been a decrease in vegetation yield making it difficult to feed people; the food to people ratio is not balanced.
  • Soil farming is not sustainable because it uses an excess amount of water and

Challenges

Some challenges I faced during the implementation of this project was making my space work for me. I also had to take into consideration pests, rodents, and transporting water.

Solutions

I utilized my vertical space as opposed to horizontal space to maximize efficiency. My DWC system reflected that as I installed plant supports to my bucket anticipating the vertical growth. As for the pests and rodents, I purchased a grow tent that would allow me to seal my system away. However, I wanted to give my plant as much natural sunlight as possible so during the day I would leave it open. I elevated my grow tent with a piece of wood for my own satisfaction and to make it harder for any critters to reach the grow tent. As for transporting water, I moved to a separate location which would allow me to get water fast and efficiently.

Project Overview

In conclusion, an indoor hydroponic system in feasable when you factor in space and time. Depending on the system, a farm build can be as cheap as you can make it since a lot of it can be made using everyday household items and some creativity.
